Carnahan's Killing Escobar Online

In a completely unprecedented move, director Joe Carnahan has posted the entire script for one of his next films online, free, for anyone to read.

The movie is Killing Pablo, Carnahan’s take on Columbian gangster, terrorist, and cult figure Pablo Escobar. It’s currently listed as in some stage of pre-production, with Christian Bale and Javier Bardem to be in the cast. Carnahan wrote the script, so presumably it’s his to do with as he pleases… you’d just think he’d want people to watch it in movie form first. Most filmmakers and their studios spend their time tracking down and suing their fans for things like this, Carnahan has done a 180 and just said “hey, here, enjoy.” The man’s either completely mad, or he he’s got the biggest balls in Hollywood.

Carnahan’s Killing Pablo script can be downloaded in MS Word format directly from his blog by clicking right here. Apparently Carnahan is taking some flack for this, probably from weasel publicists and the like, so read it while you can. There’s no telling how long he’ll be able to hold off the lions and tigers, so read away while you can… with Smokin’ Joe Carnahan’s compliments.

Wonder Woman Casting Rumors Continue

Dear Warner Brothers: No one cares anymore. We don’t care who plays Wonder Woman, just pick someone so we can stop reporting all these ridiculous casting rumors. I’m as sick of reporting them as you all are of reading them. So, rather than attempting to detail the litany of idiotic rumors surrounding the casting of Wonder Woman, I invite you to click here and root through the more than forty stories we’ve done on the subject.

Meanwhile, the latest actress rumored to be playing Wonder Woman in JLA is Megan Gale, according to Daily Telegraph. She’s Australian, 31, 5’10”, pretty (in a creepy sort of way), she’s been in absolutely nothing worth mentioning, she’s been naked a lot (thank you SexyDesktop), and if you look to your right you’ll see a non-nude picture of her. Now you’ll probably never hear her name ever again. The end.

Green Lantern Solo Movie Gets A Director

For Warner Brothers, it’s all going according to plan. Over the weekend we told you about the WB’s plan to use the JLA movie as a launching pad for a whole host of new superhero solo movies. On Sunday we learned that they’d greenlit a Flash solo movie helmed by Wedding Crashers director David Dobkin, and now it’s Green Lantern’s turn.

Variety says Greg Berlanti has been hired to co-write and direct a live-action, Green Lantern solo movie. Berlanti’s only prior directing experience was a movie I’ve never heard of called The Broken Hearts Club in 2000. Since then, he’s been writing and producing angsty, second-rate television dramas for networks like the CW. Brothers and Sisters, Everwood, Jack and Bobby, and Dawson’s Creek all pop off his resume.

We’ve all joked about how the next step for Hollywood is to turn one of their superhero franchises into a knockoff of Dawson’s Creek, and now it may actually be happening. Or maybe Berlanti is as sick of that dreck as we are and will use this as a way to make something good. I’m hoping for that.

On the positive, if we have to have more superhero movies Green Lantern and The Flash are just about the only two superheroes left who deserve them. The Flash is a household name, and while Green Lantern’s profile may have slipped a little in recent years there was a time when his popularity rivaled that of Batman or Superman. This isn’t some third-rate superhero who no one has heard of. This isn’t Elektra or Daredevil.

Owen Wilson Speaks For The First Time

Owen Wilson spoke publicly for the first time since his suicide attempt this weekend, in a chat with his best friend and Darjeeling director Wes Anderson, broadcast on MySpace. For some bizarre reason the celeb-stalking media had gotten it into their heads that he’d be discussing his recent mental and physical health issues, but apparently none of them have ever seen a Wes Anderson movie, or for that matter visited MySpace. Wrong time, wrong place. That sort of thing is best left to psychiatrists, or if you're a total media whore, Barbara Walters.

Instead, Wilson and Anderson simply sat and chatted about their movie together. It’s opening wider this weekend and they’re looking for America’s ticket-buying power. Owen’s big statements were limited to things like what he thought of the monkeys in India. He says, “they didn’t have your best interests at heart” and adds that they’re “not that impressed with the opposable thumb.” As for Darjeeling, Owen said its his favorite Anderson film and added “I just like the themes its exploring.”

The Flash Solo Movie Back On

The Flash movie may be back on. MTV is reporting that David Dobkin has been hired to direct it. We’re talking about a Flash solo project here, not that bound to be awful JLA movie George Miller is working on in between coffee breaks.

However, JLA will be in theaters first and it’ll have the Flash figuring prominently in it. Dobkin says that unlike the already existing Batman and Superman franchises, his Flash movie will exist in the same universe as the JLA characters. So I guess that makes The Flash sort of a spinoff, with JLA as a launching pad for Warners to get something going with their more minor superhero characters. Does that also mean that the guy who gets announced as Flash in JLA will be playing him for Dobkin? It seems likely.

Dobkin confirms that his version of Flash will be Wally West, the Flash version also most likely to be seen in JLA. I’ve always liked Barry Allen better, but as long as the character wears red and runs fast, there’s no reason to be picky.

The somewhat disturbing thing about the direction the Flash movie is headed is that they seem to be pushing for a comedic bent. Before Dobkin, Shawn Levy was attached to direct, and he’s best known for Night at the Museum, The Pink Panther, and Cheaper by the Dozen. Dobkin is another comedy helmer, director of Fred Claus, Wedding Crashers, and Shanghai Knights.

Directed by Richard Kelly

Written by Richard Kelly

Los Angeles, 2008;
The city stands on the brink of social, economic and environmental disaster. SOUTHLAND TALES is an epic story set over the course of three days that culminate in a massive 4th of July celebration.
A large ensemble cast of characters includes Boxer Santaros (Dwayne Johnson), an action star stricken with amnesia, Krysta Now (Sarah Michelle Gellar), an adult film star developing her own reality television project, and Roland Taverner (Seann William Scott), a Hermosa Beach police officer who holds the key to a vast conspiracy.
Southland Tales worries me, and it’s not because the few who saw an early print seemed to hate it. I’m worried because of Donnie Darko. No, not the good version that ended up in theaters. I’m talking about the modified directors cut, which Richard Kelly wasted a bunch of money on and re-released after his nearly perfect film had already become a massive cult hit.
Here’s why that worries me: Richard Kelly’s Donnie Darko Director’s Cut made his movie worse. It didn’t ruin it, Donnie Darko is too good a film for some flashy, unnecessary effects to destroy it. But it lessened it, and it lessened it because, frankly it seemed as if Richard Kelly had no idea what it was about his movie that made it so good. His Directors Cut made him seem clueless, and that makes me wonder whether Donnie Darko was so good because he’s an amazing talent or if maybe, just maybe, the film was nothing but a fluke.

Beowulf

Rated: PG-13
Distributor: Paramount Pictures
Release Date: 2007-11-16

Starring: Ray Winstone, Angelina Jolie, Anthony Hopkins, John Malkovich, Robin Wright Penn, Brendan Gleeson, Crispin Glover, Alison Lohman

Directed by Robert Zemeckis
Produced by Steve Bing, Jack Rapke, Steve Starkey, Robert Zemeckis
Written by Neil Gaiman, Roger Avary

There's a part of me that's skeptical about Robert Zemeckis's ability to do this well. After the creepy CG of The Polar Express and those souless eyes, it just seems like a challenge to do this well. The animation is pretty dead on for the actors, making me wonder why Zemeckis wants to bother with all of the animation – why not just hire the actors to act, and film this as a standard movie?
Still, that creepy CG that plagued The Polar Express doesn’t seem so prevalent. I mean, it’s still there in a few places, but there is also some pretty damn cool looking stuff here. Some of these shots are downright artistic, like a painting coming to life, which makes sense considering the historical legacy of the story of Beowulf. I think I’m starting to understand why Zemeckis wanted to go this animated route now.
The true test will be in the end product shown on the big screen. Can it pay proper respects to one of the oldest known pieces of literature, or will this just be another product that falls short? Either way, it can't be worse than Christopher Lambert's take, right?

Based on the top-selling, award-winning videogame franchise, the "Hitman" is a genetically-engineered, elite assassin known only as Agent 47. His hallmarks are a lethal grace, unwavering precision, and resolute pride in his work. But even 47 couldn't anticipate a "random equation" in his life of exactitude: the unexpected stirrings of his conscience and the unfamiliar emotions aroused in him by a mysterious Russian woman.
Timothy Olyphant just doesn’t sell himself as a big, bad, bald hitman. He looks like a quasi-weakling trying to pass himself off as a big, bad, bald hitman. I have great faith in Olyphant, but every time I’ve seen him being bad ass it’s with hair. Can he pull off the same style without it? I don’t know. The trailer doesn’t sell me on it, but I’ve got enough interest to still give the film a try instead of just writing it off as a near Uwe Boll level fiasco.

Barely out of school and still searching for his voice as an artist, twenty-year-old Thom looks forward to another idyllic holiday in his hometown of Placerville, CA, a rustic hamlet nestled in the Sierra foothills. But this Christmas, Placerville is struggling: the town’s tourist industry is failing, Thom’s ailing, once-brilliant mentor, Glen, has lost his ability to paint, and Thom’s spirited mother, MaryAnne, reveals that she’s losing their family home to foreclosure. Faced with so much uncertainty, Thom comes to realize that salvation may lie in the community of friends and loved ones he left behind. And with Glen’s help, he not only discovers himself as an artist, but helps the entire town of Placerville rediscover the true spirit of the holidays.
